MILAN DESIGN WEEK | MADE IN RATIO | BRERA
Made in Ratio returns to Milan for the third year, with London based Australian designer Brodie Neill rising to the occasion to launch Alpha chair, the latest product in its critically acclaimed self-produced collection. Brodie embraces honest design, endeavoring to produce exceptionally made furniture that conveys quality and originality. The site-specific installation at via Palermo 11, which was originally built in the 17th Century as an icehouse for the Brera district and modified into a family run wood workshop almost a 100 years ago, a picture perfect backdrop to showcase his past and present works.
The Alpha chair, a solid-wood all-purpose chair produced using the latest production technologies of shaped wooden furniture is visually seamless in it’s construction with the movement and flow of the wooden veins giving the illusion of a sold molded piece. The name Alpha is derived from the strong architectural gesture that gives the chair its inherent strength: the A shaped structure of the back legs and backrest.
Through the Alpha chair, Made in Ratio has explored the use of CNC routering technique as a high-production tool rather than a prototyping technology. Additionally, the design utilises digital sculpting, taking away the reliance on moulds. By adopting contemporary digital processes of design and manufacture.
We were lucky enough to have a sneak peak preview of the chair in London prior to Milan, we knew the chair would be a big hit during Milan Design Week and were excited to hear from Brodie that it was. We look forward to hearing his developments after the show.
