FLASH BACK | MILAN DESIGN WEEK | LOUIS VUITTON | OBJETS NOMADES

This flash back memory from Milan Design Week has resonated in our minds and corneas since April, Louis Vuitton transported its heritage and us into new territory. Having first presented an interior collaboration collection at Design Miami in 2012, the 2015 showcase was an empowering display of 21st Century design juxtaposed against the interior palatial history of Palazzo Bocconi.

The Objets Nomades range includes 16 collectable items of foldable furniture and travel accessories created in collaboration with some of the most creative designers of our times: Patricia Urquiola, Maarten Baas, the Campana Brothers, Barber & Osgerby, Nendo, Raw Edges etc….

The Campana Brothers were a stand out with their series of colourful fruit looking hanging travel zip up cabinet pieces suspended through the main entrance of the Palazzo. Fernando and Humberto Campana used the leather offcuts from the Louis Vuitton workshops to create each unique limited edition collectors piece. The designers named the piece “Maracatu” after the ritual dance from Brazil where they use wigs and clothes with stripes of cloth that they twist to make movement.

Continuing their suspended visions the Campana Brothers transformed another room within the showcase with a product called Cacoon. A swing seat created with a curving form covered in radiant red calfskin. The 3D printed structure was hung so effortlessly from a gilded steel and brass hook. The jungle esk scenographic placement flooded the social media channels throughout the week.

London design studio Raw Edges, was the other stand out from this incredible exhibition with the two designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay creating a Concertina chair & table series from flower inspired petals of padded orange calfskin on top of pale ash wood creating a folding transformation piece from chair to table. With the studio applying the same mechanism to their floating white ceiling light. The Louis Vuitton KNOW HOW statement really sumed up the rich and raw integrity of this fusion of fashion and design:

KNOW HOW > The beauty of fine materials, plasticity of forms, carefully balanced proportions, complexity of craftsmanship, close attention to details… The precepts dear to remarkable designers and the exceptional know-how of Louis Vuitton unite in the Objets Nomades, all produced and sold in limited edition. This association, born of esthetic rigor, flair for innovation and artisanal expertise, is the focal point of all creative activity at Louis Vuitton. The materials have been painstakingly selected to give the pieces in the collection their noblest expression. Each form has its fabric, and each piece its enhancement – foldable, modular, portable – demanding the most meticulous craftsmanship.
