MILAN DESIGN WEEK | Apparatus Studio | 5VIE

The urban district of 5VIE just by the side of Duomo was our stand out area this year during Milan design week. In it’s second year 5VIE art+design is a project promoted by the no-profit association Networking Milano Giovani, which brings together different sectors in this particular area of the city in agreement with retailers, schools, social foundations, public and cultural bodies, the church, residents and many others. Everything is supported by the Milan council and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. This year the area dedicated the week to Italian architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni, which was reflected through the well curated and raw selection of designer works on display, including that of New York based Apparatus Studio.

Born from the playful experimentation with vintage lighting components Apparatus Studio completely blew us away with their beauty. The combining of aged brass, etched glass, leather, horse hair and other hand-worn materials to create their sculptural lighting forms. Each individual fixture is assembled by hand in their New York studio where they thrive on their ‘perfect imperfect’ product results. The beautiful brand is created by the duo Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson with their background in fashion, interior design and public relations keenly reflected in their product presentation.

The creative studio diversify their keen creative eye from lighting to objet d’arte as well with a series of candle blocks. Inspired by precision studio tools, these modular arrangements are created through triangular forms with fine interlocking teeth that allow you to create a one or two tapered candle with multiple combinations creating a tablescape of ancient and futuristic visions. Gabriel and Jeremy have also worked in collaboration with Cinnamon Projects to build a hand finished dialogue between creativity in time, in the form of incense. The poetic formula and products allow each scent to portray a single hour of an inspired day to be burnt within the duo’s brass Censer with porcelain and leather combination, where becoming almost a torch like object that emits a soft glow.
