MILAN DESIGN WEEK || COLOUR CASTING CONCRETE | ZONA TORTONA
The best thing about Milan Design Week is the thrill of the hunt, just when you enter a space to do a quick peruse & feel perhaps a sense of disappointment: BOOM. A diamond in the rough rises from the masses of petrified plinths and you rejoice in the designer re-telling their story. Designer Ungyon Iwamura is part of the Tokyo Design Week Kawaai & Cool crew within Padiglione Visconti, Via Tortona 58. Ungyon recognized that concrete was a widely versatile material, but its usage is in fact quite limited. Her aim was to widen the possibility of product design using concrete by uncovering a new, current unknown, merit of the material.
The concrete solidifies when it comes in contact with water and by adding coloured water, only the coloured parts take shape and become solid. This giving a brand new value, a totally opposite image of what we recognise for inorganic concrete. Ungyon is part of the TDW Graduation Works within the exhibition having graduated last year from Japan’s Tama Art University from the department of Product Design.
