NEW YORK DESIGN WEEK | SIGHT UNSEEN OFFSITE | BY CONOR BURKE
Sight Unseen is an online magazine that takes readers inside the worlds of design, art, fashion, and photography. With in-depth, behind-the-scenes reportage, Sight Unseen uncovers the stories, inspirations, and obsessions of some of the most fascinating designers and artists working today. During New York Design Week this inspirational publication creates Sight Unseen OFFSITE produced and curated annually by former editors of I.D magazine and now co-founders of Sight Unseen Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer.
This show really demonstrated simple, robust, form driven designs which made a nice change from the strong presence of Memphis influenced designs, that seemed to saturate the week. The products that caught my eye were:
Studio Proba //
// Debut of an extension project of the “A Poster A Day” //
// A combination of different materials and techniques to create unique and one-of-a-kind pieces. A creative studio founded in 2014 by Alex Proba, a graphic designer, illustrator, and art director originally from Lüdenscheid, Germany. //
Aleksandra Pollner //
// Pollner is launched selected collection of tables, lamps, and sculptural wall linen organizers. //
// The line was inspired by the phenomenological experience of an interior space, reflections, and the alteration of our reality, textures and materials. Each piece explored a minimal and reductive language at its base to highlight materials and their innate attributes. Born in Gdansk Poland, is a designer living and working in Seattle and Detroit. //
CHIAOZZA (pronounced CHOW-zah) //
// The duo combined for the first time publicly a collection of their geometric wall sculptures with an installation of fictional plant forms from their on-going series Paper Plants, totally psychedelic and delicate. //
//A collaborative studio formed in 2012 led by artists Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao. //
Object & Totem //
// A new series of sculptures and one-of-a-kind vases as an extension from her current work //
// A Brooklyn-based ceramic studio founded by Julianne Ahn. //
BZIPPY & CO //
// Debuts variations on her stoneware Brutalist and Lady Finger Vase series with new glazes. //
// Los Angeles ceramicist Bari Ziperstein has a multidisciplinary practice comprising fine art, public art, and design. //
Ladies & Gentlemen Studio //
// Debuts explorative works in lighting and motion: a chandelier study of glass and geometry; table lighting in collaboration with John Hogan investigating light, texture, optics within a large-scale mobile installation. //
// A Seattle-based design studio focused on creating a diverse set of products, from small objects, home decor goods, and jewelry to furniture, lighting, and beyond. Founded by Dylan Davis & Jean Lee in 2010. //
